Member Management
Having taken my MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) some years ago, ExpressionEngine's member management and permissions reminds me of a network. It has fine grained control and access privileges, and can have any number of member groups and assignments. Below are a few screenshots showing some of this ability (popup in larger image).
Note: using member groups, one can send emails to certain groups only, and use the built in mailing list module.

Here we have the weblog posting priveleges. It is an easy matter to assign a member to a group, and then grant group permissions and access.

Here can be seen the ability to assign a member group to a weblog or a number of them.

Here we limit access to various areas of the control panel admin area.

Next we have access to Modules, here we can limit which ones to grant access to.

An often asked question is, "Can members be restricted from certain areas of the control panel, and how can it be simplified." Using the above member management this is a screenshot of a member group "Authors" when logged in. They can edit and publish their own articles only with no cp access outside of editing and publishing in one area. Comparing this to the above screenshots with full access one can see the difference. This can be customized by removing all the top tags to simplify further.
While by no means complete, this short tutorial shows the level of control over authors/members EE gives the administrator of the site.
